Diversity and Democracy in the American States

University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA

May 18th-May 20th

Call for Papers and Posters

The State Politics and Policy Conference will be in Pittsburgh May 18th – May 20th 2023. Chris Bonneau and Tessa Provins are thrilled to host SPPC 2023 with university partners including the Pitt Political Science Department, the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA), the Urban Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Center for Governance and Markets.  This year our theme is Diversity and Democracy in the American States. This theme embraces two longstanding traditions in the state politics literature: states as laboratories of democracy and states representing different aspects of diversity in American political life. We encourage submissions from faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students working on state politics and policy research. The deadline for submissions in January 20th, 2023.

Please register or log in here to submit a paper or poster proposal.

Conference Locations and Transportation

Campus Map of the University of Pittsburgh

Transportation To and From Airport

  • Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the primary airport serving the greater Pittsburgh area. There is a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus route to and from the airport called the 28X, its schedule is available here. Most major ride share companies, including Uber and Lyft, are available for ride requests from the airport.

Directions To and From Pitt’s Campus from Conference Hotel

  • All hotels are located a short (<10 minute) walk from Pitt's campus. Meals and snacks will be served at the Barco Law Building, located at 3900 Forbes Ave. Panels will take place on the 2nd Floor of David Lawrence Hall, which is connected to the Barco Law Building. Signs will be posted to assist attendees.

Driving To and Parking on Pitt’s Campus

  • We do not recommend driving to campus. However, if you do, there is daily parking at the Soldiers and Sailors Garage (4390 Bigelow Blvd), which is a 5 minute walk to the conference events. There is also a limited amount of metered street parking.

Transportation in Pittsburgh

  • Pittsburgh has an excellent public transportation system that can get you almost anywhere in the city. Check out Pittsburgh Regional Transit for bus and rail schedules.
  • The opening reception will be held at Phipps Conservatory. This is also a short walk (<20 minutes) from all the hotels. The Wyndham hotel offers a complimentary shuttle, which will take you to Phipps or campus. If you are staying at either the Residence Inn or Hilton Garden Inn and will need transportation, please contact Chris or Tessa.
  • The Friday dinner will be held at the University Club on campus.
  • If you are going to the division leading (as of 5/9) Pirates game on Saturday, you can either take a bus downtown and walk across the bridge or you can easily Uber/Lyft down there. If you purchased tickets through the group block, each ticket comes with $10 of concession credit on it, so you can buy 1/2 a beer.
