CAPS Presents- Kris Kanthak (Pitt)-“She’s Not My Governor: Negative Partisanship and Satisfaction with Democracy in the American States"

November 30, 2018 - 2:30pm to 4:00pm

Negative partisanship, the notion that voters are more motivated for their dislike of the other party than affection for their own party, has begun to play a major role in American national elections (Abramowitz & Webster 2016b, Abramowitz & Webster 2016a). And while we know that institutional structures and political environments can affect the relationship between negative partisanship and satisfaction with democracy in Europe (Kanthak & Spoon 2018), we know little about how differences across the US states might play a similar role. Using data from the 2016 American National Election Study, the current paper explores how citizens of particular states differ in their levels of satisfaction with democracy and how negative partisanship, combined with state-level political institutions may affect those differences.
